Hickenlooper Statement on Trump’s Whiplash on Iran War

WASHINGTON - Today, U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper released the following statement in response to President Trump's reckless threats to dramatically escalate his war of choice with Iran just hours before cancelling scheduled strikes and claiming a peace deal is close:

"The whiplash from President Trump is just too much. One minute he's saying he's going to bomb Iran into oblivion, the next he's pulling back and saying that a deal is coming soon.

"The problem is, he's said that a deal is close at least 37 times before.

"Enough is enough. Americans don't want more bombs in Iran. They want lower bills.

"Let's stop the chaos. This illegal war has got to end now."

The whiplash diplomacy comes as the U.S. has already lost 14 servicemembers in the conflict, with hundreds more injured. President Trump escalated strikes and threatened to take control of Iran's oil industry, the fifth-largest in the world. In a complete turnaround, five hours after his threats, Trump canceled planned strikes against Iran and once again claimed a peace deal was near. Trump has claimed a deal was imminent nearly 40 times before.

Hickenlooper has voted eight times to end Trump' s highly unpopular and illegal war with Iran, calling out skyrocketing gas prices and costly impacts on farmers' bottom lines. Hickenlooper has spoken multiple times on the Senate floor condemning Trump for sidestepping Congress and dragging America into a war that's driving Americans' cost-of-living through the roof. When Trump made similar threats of escalation in April, Hickenlooper quickly denounced his reckless comments.
