Southern University adds four new electric vehicle charging stations

Date August 21, 2026

Southern University and A&M College has installed four new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the parking lot of the Southern University Welcome Center on Harding Boulevard, expanding access to EV charging for the Southern University community and surrounding area.

The new charging stations provide an additional option for students, faculty, staff, visitors and members of the surrounding community who drive electric vehicles. The stations also support efforts to encourage the use of lower-emission vehicles and engines, which can contribute to improved air quality.

The $48,000 project was funded through the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality via Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust Funds. Planning and design began in late 2025, with construction completed in early 2026.

The project provides additional EV charging infrastructure in an area where charging options are currently limited and supports Southern's ongoing efforts to enhance campus infrastructure and promote innovation, accessibility and environmental responsibility.
