Parliament Sitting for 26 September
Question for oral answer
45 Ms Poh Li San asked the Minister for Digital Development and Information whether the Government has any plans to establish a national-level AI task force to create solutions useful for our industries and to make a global impact.
Answer
Artificial Intelligence is a general-purpose technology. Its value depends on how it is used across multiple settings. The refreshed National AI Strategy 2.0, launched in 2023, is intended to promote ownership and capability development by key stakeholders in each domain, to apply AI in impactful ways. It does not presume that a centralised entity is best suited for this purpose. However, where helpful, the Government steps in. For example, the sectoral AI Centre of Excellence in Manufacturing convenes stakeholders across industry, research, and the start-up ecosystem to develop AI-enabled solutions for use cases in the manufacturing sector. These include quality assurance, predictive maintenance, and operations optimisation. Companies in other industries will likely need different AI-enabled solutions, some of which may already be available off-the-shelf. We will continue to work with relevant partners to support industry adoption, whether it is to discover readily-available AI solutions, or to develop new ones.
