In honor of National First-Generation Day, Newcomb-Tulane College, the Center for Academic Equity and campus partners hosted an event last week to celebrate first-generation students at Tulane.

The event featured engaging activities, food and refreshments along with department representatives sharing helpful resources to first-generation students. In addition to last week's event, Tulane has several initiatives throughout the year in which first-generation students can participate, including First-Gen Fridays, a monthly event for first-generation students to socialize and build community with one another, along with faculty and staff who were first-generation students.

The event highlights Tulane's continued commitment to and recognition of first-generation students and their success. Recently, Tulane joined the FirstGen Forward Network, a group of higher education institutions dedicated to strengthening the experiences and success of first-generation students in education and future career opportunities.

Staff from offices like Newcomb-Tulane College Academic Advising were on hand to share information about programs, resources and initiatives available to students. Students were invited to participate in an activity in which they answer a provided prompt: sharing words of encouragement to a first-generation student; sharing a resource that has helped them succeed at Tulane; answering what they are most proud of as a first-generation student; or sharing an inspiring person who has influenced their journey. Creative activities like creating charm bracelets were also part of the event.
