AWS Summit Washington, D.C. 2026: AWS is investing billions to put AI into production for the public sector
AWS Secret Cloud for Industry allows defense contractors to run classified workloads on AWS infrastructure in their own isolated environment for the first time, with Northrop Grumman as the first partner and $20 million in credits available over three years. AWS announced a $1 billion IC Accelerated Modernization Framework (ICAMF) to help U.S. Intelligence Community agencies migrate workloads to AWS through credits available through October 2030. AWS Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE), backed by a $1 billion investment, embeds thousands of engineers with customers to co-develop AI solutions and compress development timelines from months to days. AWS is also powering critical initiatives globally, including collaborating with the Department of Energy and Idaho National Laboratory on AI-driven nuclear reactor design, supporting the UK's national-scale AI deployment across government, and partnering with the Fleming Initiative to combat antimicrobial resistance.
AWS invests $1 billion to embed AI forward deployed engineers with customers
AWS Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) is a new $1 billion global organization that embeds thousands of expert engineers with customers to co-develop and deploy AI solutions on top of their existing data, governance, and processes. Using purpose-built agents and an AI-Driven Development Lifecycle, FDE compresses AI application development from months into days, with each deployment making the next one faster. Companies including the Allen Institute, Cox Automotive, the NBA, Ricoh, Southwest Airlines, and the NFL are already working with AWS FDE. Unlike traditional consulting, every engagement is designed to leave organizations self-sufficient with lasting AI skills, workflows, and agentic systems running in their own AWS environment.
The farthest livestream in history: How AWS helped NASA stream 4K from the Moon
For the first time in history, NASA's Artemis II mission transmitted live 4K video from the Moon to Earth via laser, reaching 25 million viewers. The footage traveled from the Orion spacecraft to a ground terminal in Australia, then crossed 15,000 kilometers over the AWS global network to NASA's facility in New Mexico-a connection built in weeks for the cost of a laptop. AWS also powered the cloud computing behind Orion's trajectory simulations, processing thousands of compute hours to adjust the flight path in near real-time.

Amazon is investing in one of the world's largest nature-based carbon removal programs in South Africa's Eastern Cape, where more than 180 million spekboom plant cuttings will be planted across over 50,000 hectares of degraded land to restore the declining Albany thicket ecosystem. The spekboom succulent absorbs carbon at rates comparable to young tropical forests and helps regenerate surrounding soil and biodiversity. The project is expected to create approximately 11,000 jobs by 2030 and generate more than $500 million in local economic value through wages, procurement, and community investment. Amazon has committed to purchasing 1.95 million tonnes of carbon removal credits from the project, which enabled the World Bank to launch an innovative Spekboom Outcome Bond to attract additional investors.
