House Passes Congressman Tim Moore’s Bipartisan Improving Law Enforcement Officer Safety and Wellness Through Data Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, the House passed Congressman Tim Moore's Bipartisan Improving Law Enforcement Officer Safety and Wellness Through Data Act (H.R. 2240) on a bipartisan vote of 403-11. This legislation aims to strengthen protections for law enforcement officers by enhancing data collection on anti-police attacks and expanding access to mental health support for officers nationwide. H.R. 2240 is the first piece of legislation introduced by Rep. Moore to pass the U.S. House.

"I'm proud that this legislation passed the House with wide bipartisan support at a time when our police officers need Congress to stand shoulder to shoulder with them and say enough is enough," said Rep. Moore."This bill ensures we're not turning a blind eye to the threats they face and the toll this job takes by improving how we track attacks, exposing patterns of violence, and making sure officers have access to the mental health care they've earned. If we want safe communities, we have to take care of the people who keep them safe."

In 2024, 342 officers were shot in the line of duty, resulting in 50 fatalities. Already this year, 109 officers have been shot, including 21 in ambush-style attacks, and 12 officers have been killed. These figures don't even capture the full extent of the violence, as many incidents involving officers are either unreported or not fully documented.

The White House Office of Management and Budget also issued a Statement of Administration Policy in support of this legislation, saying, "Law enforcement officers bravely serve and risk their lives every day for our safety and the rule of law. Collecting more information so that the Federal Government can better understand their needs, the problems they face, and the options we have before us is a step forward in improving morale, effectiveness, and, ultimately, public safety."

The legislation is supported by leading law enforcement groups, including the Fraternal Order of Police, National Association of Police Organizations, Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, North Carolina Fraternal Order of Police, North Carolina Sheriffs' Association, Sergeants Benevolent Association NYPD, Association of State Criminal Investigative Agencies, Major Cities Chiefs Association, Major County Sheriffs of America, International Union of Police Organizations, International Association of Chiefs of Police, and National Narcotics Officers' Associations' Coalition.
