Securityplus FCU Volunteer Leader Champions Mental Health Through TALMAR Partnership

Securityplus Federal Credit Union recently recognized it's Vice President of Facilities, Jack Schiefer, for his outstanding leadership in mental health advocacy and volunteerism through a meaningful year-long partnership with Therapeutic Alternatives of Maryland.

Located in Baltimore's scenic Cromwell Valley Park, TALMAR is a nonprofit organization offering therapeutic horticulture and vocational training to individuals with disabilities, veterans, and those facing mental health challenges. Its mission is to provide nature-based programs that promote healing, resilience, and personal growth through hands-on gardening, farming, and social interaction.
Over the past year, Jack Schiefer, a Securityplus volunteer leader, has inspired and coordinated multiple employee service days at TALMAR's therapeutic farm. Securityplus volunteers have rolled up their sleeves to prepare garden beds, remove weeds, and create space for planting-all in support of TALMAR's mission to nurture emotional well-being through nature.

"Jack's leadership truly embodies our CARES values-Collaboration, Agility, Respect, Excellence, and Spirit," said Obinna "Obi" Ndukwe, Chief People & Impact Officer at Securityplus. "He has inspired our teams to see volunteerism not just as a one-time gesture, but as a meaningful investment in the long-term mental and physical health of our neighbors."

TALMAR's nature-based programs provide therapeutic experiences that allow participants to build confidence, manage stress, and cultivate new skills in a calm, inclusive environment. The Securityplus team has been instrumental in helping maintain and grow these healing spaces, ensuring that TALMAR continues to be a sanctuary for growth, connection, and purpose.

"Volunteering at TALMAR has been an eye-opening and heartwarming experience," said Jack Schiefer. "You can see how spending time outdoors, removing weeds, planting vegetables, and working with the soil, helps people reconnect with themselves and others. I'm proud of our Securityplus team for making such a real and visible impact."

This partnership exemplifies Securityplus' broader mission to support both financial and personal wellness in the communities it serves. Through its Community Impact Program, the credit union regularly engages with local nonprofits to address real-world challenges, from housing insecurity to food access and mental health.

"Partnerships like this show how small actions, digging in the dirt, planting a seed, or offering your time, can have a big impact," added Ndukwe. "They remind us that care, compassion, and community are all connected."

As part of its continued support, Securityplus encourages members, employees, and the general public to get involved with TALMAR's mission. Whether it's volunteering for a day, attending an event, or donating tools and supplies, there are many ways to support this life-changing work.
