Chum salmon are an important cultural and commercial resource to communities within the Arctic, Yukon, and Kuskokwim (AYK) region. Beginning in 2020, adult returns of Chum salmon to the AYK region declined. This abrupt shift to dramatically lower numbers of returning Chum salmon to the AYK region led to closures of commercial and subsistence fishing and had everyone asking: "where have all the Chum salmon gone?"
