The production of almost all cereals has increased. This is what emerged from the provisional harvest estimate published by Statbel, the Belgian statistical office. Potatoes and sugar beets are also doing very well.
Despite the wet autumn of 2024, 19.5% more winter wheat was sown than in 2023. Thanks to the exceptionally favourable weather in the spring and summer, combined with rainfall at the right times, the yield was 31% higher than in 2024. Together with the increase in acreage, this led to a production increase of no less than 57%. Nevertheless, total production still remains below the level of 2023.
We see a similar trend for spelt and triticale. Spelt production rose by no less than 133%, while triticale saw an increase of 73%.
The yield increase for spring cereals is more limited. Spring wheat yielded 6% more and spring barley 11% more. Due to a sharp decline in the area sown with spring wheat (-40.8%), total production fell by 37%, making spring wheat the only cereal with a decline in production.
Maize was also sown less. Due to the persistent drought, yields remained at the 2024 level, resulting in a 9% decline in production for grain maize and a 4% decline for green maize.
Potatoes performed particularly well in 2025. The area under cultivation increased by 7.2% compared to 2024, and yields increased by 8.6%. This resulted in a total production increase of 16%.
Due to low sugar prices, 11% less sugar beet was planted. Nevertheless, a record year is expected in terms of yield, with an increase of 25%. This partly compensates for the decline in acreage, resulting in an 11% increase in total production.
