The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (Minister CHAE Hwi-young, MCST) announced that, as part of the nationwide travel campaign held in conjunction with the Korea Grand Festival[1], a 50% discount on templestay participation fees will be offered throughout November. To prepare for the anticipated increase in demand, Second Vice Minister Kim Dae-hyun visited Magoksa Temple in Gongju, Chungcheongnam-do province(designated a UNESCO World Heritage in 2018) on November 3 (Monday), to inspect the templestay facilities and gather onsite feedback.

The templestay program, currently operated at 158 temples nationwide, has gained growing popularity among those seeking peace of mind and body amid the busyness of modern life. Participants can enjoy a variety of experiences, including tea conversation with monks, meditation, Buddhist services, monastic meals, and temple cuisine classes. In 2024, the program recorded its highest-ever participation, attracting 332,297 visitors (283,454 Koreans and 48,843 foreigners). With growing international interest in the templestay program, 31 temples now offer specialized foreign-language programs staffed by trained multilingual personnel. In addition, 15 temples are dedicated to promoting and popularizing temple cuisine, a key branch of Korean culinary culture.

During his visit to Magoksa Temple, Second Vice Minister Kim met with Ven. Wonkyung, the temple's abbot, and other temple representatives to discuss operational challenges and gather feedback on the management of the templestay program. He also inspected the facilities to ensure a safe and pleasant environment for visitors

"Templestay is not only a part of Korea's traditional cultural heritage, but also a valuable cultural asset that invites people to experience peace of body and mind," said Second Vice Minister Kim. "We expect that the incorporating the templestay program into this unprecedented nationwide discount campaign will not only enhance the Travel initiative, but also invigorate local economies."
