Columbia Fire Department responds to structure fire, Dec. 6

On Saturday, Dec. 6, at 12:01 p.m., Columbia Fire Department (CFD) units responded to a structure fire in the 1600 block of Mores Boulevard. Multiple 911 calls were received by Boone County Joint Communications reporting a fire in the woods or a large amount of smoke in the area; however, the callers were unable to identify the source.

CFD arrived within four minutes to the heavily wooded area and were forced to make access to what appeared to be the remnants of an abandoned barn fully involved in fire. Firefighters quickly initiated an aggressive attack, bringing the fire under control within 20 minutes, preventing the fire from extending into the wildland urban interface. In total, five units comprising 19 personnel were dispatched to the scene and remained for approximately two hours.

There were no injuries to either the public or firefighters. Columbia Fire Marshals have completed their investigation, and the cause of the fire is undetermined.

Columbia Fire Department responds to commercial structure fire, Dec. 7

On Sunday, Dec. 7, at 12:38 p.m., CFD units responded to a commercial structure fire in the 2500 block of West Worley Street.

At approximately 12:38 p.m., a chief officer was in the area of Stadium Boulevard and West Worley Street, where he recognized signs of fire and searched to locate the source. After a short investigation, he located a working commercial structure fire at a large storage facility on West Worley Street.

Units were dispatched and arrived within two minutes to find smoke emanating throughout the large storage facility complex. Firefighters forced entry into the secured site to access a 120-foot-byfoot multiple-unit storage building that was heavily involved in fire. The incident was immediately upgraded to a second alarm, bringing a total of eight fire companies and 34 personnel to the scene.

Firefighters quickly initiated an aggressive attack, which included laying out over a thousand feet of 4-inch supply hose from hydrants and several hundred feet of attack hose from fire engines to bring the fire under control within 45 minutes of dispatch.

There were no injuries as a result of this incident, and CFD successfully saved over 50% of the structure and its contents. Crews remained on scene for several hours conducting overhaul and fully extinguishing the contents of the units. CFD requested assistance from Public Works during overhaul operations. A crew and equipment from the Street Department responded to the scene and removed contents from the affected units.

The incident is currently being investigated by the Columbia Police Department.

Columbia Fire Department responds to residential structure fire, Dec. 8

On Monday, Dec. 8, at 4:22 a.m., CFD units were dispatched to a residential structure fire in the 1400 block of West Worley Street.

CFD arrived within three minutes to find heavy smoke showing from the eaves of a single-story home. Firefighters entered the home to find flames in a small attic space and were able to extinguish the fire within 10 minutes.

One patient was evaluated on scene, but denied medical care or transport.

The Columbia Fire Marshals have completed their investigation and determined the cause to be an accidental electrical fire.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds residents that smoke alarms save lives. Smoke alarms should be placed on the ceiling (or on a wall no closer than four inches from the ceiling) on every level of your home and outside of places where people sleep. Check your smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button. Change your smoke alarm batteries at least twice per year when adjusting your clocks for Daylight Saving Time. Replace any smoke alarm over 10 years old.
