National Mining Association recognizes 29 Mine in Viburnum, Mo.; Doe Run technicians win national championship at mine rescue contest in Tennessee
ST. LOUIS (October 1, 2026) - The Doe Run Company (Doe Run) today received a 2025 Sentinels of Safety Award from the National Mining Association (NMA), recognizing the company's 29 Mine in Viburnum, Mo., in the Small Mine Metal/Nonmetal Underground category. NMA presented the award at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., marking Doe Run's and its predecessors' 28th Sentinels of Safety Award.
The Sentinels of Safety Award is one of the mining industry's longest-standing safety honors, recognizing operations that achieve the most employee hours worked without a lost-time injury.
"Safety is a core value at Doe Run and the foundation for everything we do," said Matt Wohl, President and CEO of Doe Run. "Earning our 28th Sentinels of Safety Award is a tribute to the men and women of the 29 Mine, who choose to do the job the right way on every shift and look out for one another."
The Sentinels of Safety honor caps a strong year for Doe Run's safety programs. In August, the company's Gray and Maroon mine rescue teams competed against 35 metal/nonmetal teams from across the country at the national mine rescue contest in Sevierville, Tenn., where Doe Run's Mark Barton and Alec Weber won the national championship in the team technician category.
At the national contest, Doe Run's results included:
• Mark Barton and Alec Weber - national champions, team technician category
• Gray team - second place, metal/nonmetal national category
• Gray team - second place, metal/nonmetal field problems, day one
• Maroon team - second place, metal/nonmetal field problems, day two
• Gray team - third place, metal/nonmetal field problems, days one and two combined
The contest featured two days of mine rescue field problems that simulate underground emergency situations, along with team technician competitions that test competitors' ability to troubleshoot and repair mine rescue equipment. The national results follow the Maroon team's overall grand champion finish at the Colorado Regional Mine Rescue Competition in July.
"Competing at the national level against the best teams in the country takes a tremendous amount of commitment," said Craig Collins, Doe Run safety manager. "Our team members train on their own time because they want to be ready to answer the call whenever someone needs them. Mark and Alec's national championship, along with strong finishes from both teams, shows the skill and dedication they bring to the job every day."
Doe Run's mine rescue teams compete in mine rescue competitions annually. The teams consistently place at or near the top in regional and national mine rescue competitions.
Doe Run's focus on safety extends beyond mine rescue. Across the company, Doe Run employees annually complete approximately 35,000 hours of environmental, health, and safety training.
