COURTLAND , Ala., DEC. 16, 2025 - Lockheed Martin's (NYSE:LMT) Manufacturing Basic Skills (MBS) pre-apprenticeship program was recently named a Regional Work-Based Learning Best Practice by the Alabama Office of Apprenticeship, recognizing its success in connecting students with high-tech careers in aerospace manufacturing.
The MBS program is a precursor to Lockheed Martin's successful Advanced Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship Program (AMTAP), which trains participants in the specialized skills required to build space electronics, including cable harness assembly, soldering and quality inspection, while earning industry-recognized certifications. Graduates are often offered full-time positions at Lockheed Martin's Courtland facility, where they help produce systems supporting critical space and defense missions.
"These programs give students technical training as well as a career pathway," said Reshondra McInnis, Production Operations Director & Courtland Site Executive. "Our graduates leave with skills, certifications and opportunities that will sustain them for a lifetime."
Since its start, AMTAP has forged nine formal partnerships with North Alabama high schools, career technical centers and community colleges, reaching more than 36,000 students. The company has received more than $2.2 million in state and federal reimbursements to help offset training costs. To date, over 150 graduates from the Alabama program have received full-time employment offers.
"When education and industry align, great things happen," McInnis said. "The proven success of our MBS and AMTAP programs are proof that Alabama can grow its own world-class aerospace workforce."
Nationally, apprenticeship programs are on the rise. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, there were nearly 600,000 active registered apprenticeships in 2021, with participation growing 66% over the past decade. About 94% of apprentices retain employment after completing their programs, a statistic AMTAP is proud to match.
With its combination of classroom learning, hands-on training and strong educational partnerships, Lockheed Martin's training programs serve as a model for work-based learning, preparing the next generation of advanced manufacturing talent and strengthening the state's position in the space economy.
