Everytown for Gun Safety Releases 2026 State Gun Law Rankings; New York Continues National Leadership, Ranking 4th in the Nation

ALBANY, N.Y. - Today, Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund launched the updated "Gun Law Rankings" for 2026, an online tool and website that ranks all 50 states based on the strength of their gun laws and catalogs gun safety laws state-by-state. Everytown's analysis found that New York ranks 4th in the nation for its comprehensive gun laws, maintaining its status as a National Leader.

New York's top-tier ranking is a testament to the relentless efforts of volunteers, survivors, and legislators who have refused to remain static. Championed by Governor Hochul's proactive public safety agenda and leadership from state legislators, New York continues to set the national pace in the 2026 session by tackling the next generation of firearm threats: 3D-printed "ghost guns" and the rise of DIY machine guns.

"New York doesn't just pass laws. We set the gold standard for the rest of the country," said Janet Goldstein, a volunteer with the New York chapter of Moms Demand Action. "While other states are playing catch-up, our volunteers, survivors, and legislators have spent the last year tackling the next generation of gun violence. And this year, by cracking down on 3D-printed firearms and the illegal 'Glock switches' that turn handguns into machine guns, we are proving that New York will always stay one step ahead of the gun industry to keep our families safe."

"For my generation, gun violence is an ever-changing threat, but New York's leadership remains the constant," said Jeanne Lu, a volunteer with the Cornell University chapter of Students Demand Action. "We aren't just worried about the guns already on our streets; we're worried about the ones being printed in secret. Seeing New York maintain its top-tier ranking while tackling these emerging, high-tech threats gives us hope. We're not just satisfied to stay at number four; we're leaning in, fighting for new and stronger laws, and leading the way into the future of gun violence prevention."
