Gilbert, Ariz. - As New Year's approaches, we are urging residents to prioritize safety when using fireworks. Every year, improper use and disposal of fireworks lead to house fires, injuries and emergency calls.
If you plan to use consumer fireworks, keep these safety tips in mind:
Remember to properly dispose of fireworks by following these tips:
In Gilbert, fireworks are allowed only on private property with the owner's permission during the New Year's period of December 26 through January 3. Using fireworks outside this period can result in a $1,000 civil penalty. Fireworks are never allowed on public property, including parks, streets, sidewalks or other public areas.
Only certain consumer fireworks are legal, including ground and handheld sparklers, fountains, wheels and toy smoke devices. Fireworks that fly into the air or explode, such as firecrackers, Roman candles, bottle rockets and aerial shells are illegal. Residents who see illegal firework use should call the Gilbert Police non-emergency line at (480) 503-6500.
Residents are encouraged to be considerate of their neighbors when using fireworks. Avoid lighting them late at night, and keep in mind that loud noises can be stressful for pets and veterans living with PTSD.
