The City of Spokane is gearing up to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Office of Neighborhood Services (ONS) -- a milestone that highlights a quarter century of dedicated service in fostering stronger, safer, and more connected neighborhoods.
Spokane is unique in that it has ratified in City code the ability for residents and business owners to organize as neighborhoods councils. Neighborhood councils are empowered to work directly with the city to advocate for change, address community concerns, and even receive project funding to improve their neighborhoods. Since its founding, the City's ONS staff have been instrumental in supporting these councils and ensuring that Spokane's 29 unique neighborhoods have a direct voice in shaping their future.
"For 25 years, the Office of Neighborhood Services has supported grassroots change in Spokane. This milestone is a testament to the power of community-driven solutions and the dedication of our residents who work to make Spokane a better place for all," Mayor Lisa Brown said.
ONS will commemorate the anniversary with a celebration at April's Lilac City Live - the Spokane Public Library's quarterly live "late-night" talk show. The event will feature informative interviews, live music performances, a resource fair, and historic neighborhood displays.
Attendees will receive a copy of ONS' new zine, titled "This is Spokane: A Civic Guide for Neighbors." The goal of this publication is to provide an easy and interesting way to learn more about how the City of Spokane operates and how Spokane residents can get involved. The zine will introduce readers to local municipal structures, everyday processes, decision making, and a better understanding of how and where they fit in.
