Kaleida Health Successfully Performs First Inspire Implant Nerve Stimulator Surgery for Treatment of Sleep Apnea

Kaleida Health is proud to announce the successful completion of the system's first Inspire implant nerve stimulator. This innovative procedure offers a new treatment option for patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who may not respond well to traditional therapies.

The Inspire implant is a breakthrough, FDA-approved device that delivers gentle stimulation to the nerves controlling the airway muscles, helping to keep the airway open during sleep. The device is approved for eligible adult patients over the age of 18 and for pediatric patients with Down syndrome, expanding treatment options for those who may struggle with other therapies.

By performing this first Inspire implant surgery, Kaleida Health has further demonstrated its commitment to expanding advanced treatment options and improving the quality of life for sleep apnea patients across the region.

"We are thrilled to offer this treatment to our patients as part of our comprehensive sleep medicine program for children and adults at Kaleida Health," said Michael R. Markiewicz, DDS, MPH, MD, clinical co-director of the Craniofacial Center of WNY and professor and chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University at Buffalo. "Our initial motivation for introducing this surgery at Kaleida Health was to provide treatment for children with the implant. Additionally, we have seen a significant number of adult patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. We are excited to include this as one of the many therapies available to treat patients with obstructive sleep apnea."

Obstructive sleep apnea, a condition often managed with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, can be difficult for many patients to maintain over time. The Inspire implant offers a mask-free solution, allowing patients to activate the device with a small handheld remote before bed and turn it off when they wake. Studies show that Inspire therapy is both safe and effective, significantly reducing symptoms and enhancing the quality of life for many who have not found success with CPAP.

As one of the region's leading healthcare providers, Kaleida Health is dedicated to bringing the latest in medical advancements to the community. The introduction of the Inspire implant is a testament to Kaleida Health's ongoing efforts to improve patient care through innovation, expertise, and compassionate service.
