The purpose of the project is to improve learning experiences and enhance research capabilities.

To achieve this, the project will deploy a 5G standalone (SA) mobile private network (MPN) in Athens, Greece.

What will it provide?

The project will provide advanced digital education and research platforms at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). By seamlessly integrating immersive digital technologies, the project will transform learning experiences through the use of extended, augmented and virtual reality (XR, AR, VR) as well as digital twins.

How will it work?

The project's 5G SA MPN will enable the implementation of two use cases:

  1. XR hybrid learning platform - The network will enable the creation of a collaborative, hybrid learning environment at NTUA by incorporating AR and VR tools into the university's educational framework. Tailored to NTUA's diverse curricula, including disciplines such as mechanical and civil engineering, the platform offers immersive, interactive learning experiences that enhance student engagement and comprehension. Lead by FifthIngenium, this initiative aligns the XR system with academic needs, enabling educators to present complex subjects in a visually engaging and accessible format. 5G plays a crucial role in this use case by delivering high-speed, low-latency connectivity, ensuring seamless real-time interaction and rich multimedia content for AR/VR applications
  2. Automotive Open Platform and digital twins' environment - The network will enable the provision of advanced digital infrastructure to support cutting-edge research and innovation in the automotive sector, particularly in cooperative, connected, automated mobility applications. This initiative integrates digital-twin technology, creating dynamic digital replicas of vehicle systems and real-world environments, using custom-built on-board units, internet of things devices and sensors. These digital replicas facilitate key services such as predictive maintenance, enhanced safety testing and performance optimisation.

How will it be built?

The project will deploy a 5G SA MPN with local breakout and edge computing capabilities to deliver innovative services across the NTUA campus, operating on the N78 band and edge data centres equipped with Hewlett Packard Enterprise servers, Nvidia network interface cards and Cisco switches. The network is designed to support devices such as network slicing, network exposure functions and XR-optimised indoor deployments. The network will also provide outdoor, campus-wide coverage for automotive testing.
