Attorney General Clark Marks National Small Business Week by Highlighting the Resources of Her Office’s Consumer Assistance Program

Attorney General Charity Clark today reminded Vermont businesses of the resources available through her office's Consumer Assistance Program (CAP). CAP's Small Business Initiative assists businesses and consumers with resolving complaints, works to connect businesses with resources, and answers questions from business owners. Vermont is one of the few states in the country that considers businesses to be consumers, protected by consumer laws. The Vermont Consumer Protection Act applies to businesses when they make a purchase outside their contractual or day-to-day operations, meaning if a local business makes a purchase just like any other consumer might (for supplies or food for an event, for example), they are considered a consumer in that context. CAP is designed to help mediate disputes and bring relief to consumers - including small businesses - in need. CAP helped businesses after the floods, educates consumers on a variety of issues including auto issues, and helps stop scams targeting businesses. Vermont businesses are also protected by the Vermont Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

"As Vermonters, we know that small businesses are the backbone of our downtowns and economy. National Small Business Week is a great time to shop, visit, and support each other at the local level," said Attorney General Clark. "If you are a small business owner in need of assistance, I want you to know that our Small Business Initiative is here to help."

Small businesses may contact CAP for free assistance, at 800-649-2424, or by email at ago.cap@vermont.gov . For National Small Business Week, shop local and support our small businesses and the local economy.
