CHICAGO - A 14-story tower crane now stands over the construction site of The New Concourse D at O'Hare International Airport, marking a major milestone as work advances on the new 19-gate passenger facility.
Visible from across O'Hare's sprawling 7,200-acre campus, the crane, which topped out Sunday night, is the latest sign of progress on the largest new passenger facility built at the airport in more than 30 years.
"This tower crane is more than a new feature on O'Hare's skyline. It is a powerful and highly visible symbol of the progress we are making on The New Concourse D," said Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) Commissioner Michael McMurray. "From nearly every corner of our 7,200-acre airport campus, passengers and employees can now see ORDNext taking shape. This milestone reflects the skill, coordination and dedication of the crews who are building the next generation of O'Hare."
The New Concourse D is the first of two satellite concourses planned as part of ORDNext, the City of Chicago's historic modernization of O'Hare's core terminal facilities. The concourse will initially operate as an extension of Concourse C and will provide a modern, comfortable and seamless experience for domestic and international passengers.
Construction remains on schedule for completion in late 2028, led by the joint venture group AECOM Hunt Clayco Bowa. Mayor Brandon Johnson announced last month that the project's $1.455 billion price cap is at least $21 million below its approved budget.
Designed by Chicago-based Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in partnership with Ross Barney Architects, JGMA and Arup, The New Concourse D will expand gate capacity and help lay the groundwork for the future O'Hare Global Terminal.
