Issue of electing a candidate for judge of Criminal Chamber of Court of Cassation debated

The Supreme Judicial Council proposed the candidacies of Hovhannes Avagyan, Nelly Baghdasaryan and Hayk Grigoryan for the vacancy of the judge of the Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation.

The National Assembly must choose a candidate for the judge of the Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation from the 3 candidates presented. The issue was debated at the sitting of October 22 in accordance with the procedure established by Article 135 of the NA Law the Rules of Procedure.

The Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council Karen Andreasyan presented the biographical data and professional activities of the candidates.

The candidate for the judge of the Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation Hovhannes Avagyan assured that as an acting judge, he realizes the role and importance of the Court of Cassation, the highest judicial instance, in the complex task of ensuring the legal security of our country and strengthening the authority of the judiciary. He opined that the responsible role of the highest court within every state guided by democratic values ​​requires from its members not only the insight of a professional lawyer, but also experience and a clear understanding of the problems within the given judicial authority. "I am ready to use my experience and knowledge to ensure higher standards of justice," the candidate mentioned.

"Staying faithful to the judge's oath, guided exclusively by the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia, laws and internal conviction, as a judge I was ready and am ready to continue my work in the responsible position of the judge of the Court of Cassation of the Republic of Armenia, to preserve and contribute to the strengthening of the institutional independence of the judicial system, maintaining the authority of the judiciary," the next candidate Nelly Baghdasaryan assured.

Hayk Grigoryan first analyzed the new opportunities conditioned by the ratification of the Statute of the International Criminal Court and in the future their possible correlation and influence with the functions of the Court of Cassation, and then presented the motives and concerns that led him to be a candidate. He presented the work done by the Supreme Judicial Council within the framework of legal reforms.
