Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher Celebrates Completion of Sugar Land Training Facility for First Responders

Today, Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) celebrated the completion of Sugar Land's Public Safety Training Facility with a ribbon cutting and walk through of the facility with Sugar Land Mayor Carol McCutcheon, Sugar Land Police Chief Pete Lara, and Sugar Land Fire Chief Mark Campise. The facility will accommodate incident command simulation training, EMS training, and advanced level firefighting courses such as a smoke diver course.

"Sugar Land's new Public Safety Training Facility represents the best of what government can and should do-respond to the needs of the community by getting the input of the people, working collaboratively across agencies and across the aisle, and prioritizing preparation, training, and the safety of our communities and the people who protect and serve them," said Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher. "That is why I am so proud to have helped in the development of the center by securing $1,000,000 in congressional funding for its construction through the congressional appropriations process. I was delighted to join Mayor McCutcheon, members of City Council, Chief Lara, Chief Campise, and members of their departments to cut the ribbon on this facility today and to celebrate what we can do when we work together."

In 2019, voters approved a public safety bond package, which included funding to construct a new training facility. In the spring of 2024, Congresswoman Fletcher requested and secured $1,000,000 in federal funding to support the project. The $1,000,000 in federal funding, together with the bond package, helped implement facility and infrastructure improvements by adding storage, office space, electricity, lighting, and concrete pads to support firefighter training. It also helped build classroom space and specialized first responder training rooms with controlled environments.

Congresswoman Fletcher requested funding for the Sugar Land Public Safety Training Facility for the City of Sugar Land through the community funding project process in Congress. The process allows members of Congress to request funding for specific projects in their districts. She secured the funding through the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024, H.Res. 1102, a bipartisan government funding bill that funds essential programs and projects-including the Public Safety Training Facility-for Fiscal Year 2024.
