AstraZeneca’s Mount Vernon, Indiana Supply Site Earns its first EPA’s ENERGY STAR® Certification for Superior Energy Efficiency

PUBLISHED 6 June 2025

Outperforms similar U.S. Plants on measure of energy efficiency

AstraZeneca's Mount Vernon Pharmaceutical Supply Site has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) ENERGY STAR certification, which signifies that the industrial plant performs in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meets strict energy efficiency performance levels set by the EPA. This is the first year the Mount Vernon site has earned the ENERGY STAR certification, reflecting a legacy of continued energy savings.

The Mount Vernon site improved its performance by managing energy use strategically across the entire organization, reducing energy consumption where feasible and making cost-effective improvements to its plant.

Femi D-Etti, Vice President & General Manager, AstraZeneca, said: "We are pleased to accept the EPA's ENERGY STAR certification in recognition of our energy efficiency efforts. Through this achievement, we have demonstrated our commitment to environmental stewardship while also lowering our energy costs."

To earn the ENERGY STAR, the Mount Vernon site took the following actions:

  • Lamp overhaul: Replacement of nearly 100,000 lamps to boost energy savings.
  • Advanced ventilation: Installation of fan walls and improved outside air pre-treatment systems.
  • Smart programs: Implementation of switch-off and night set-back programs for efficient energy use.
  • Heating upgrades: Ongoing enhancements with high-efficiency electric boilers for optimal heating and ventilation.
  • Solar field: A crowning achievement is our impressive 3.5-megawatt solar field, which offsets approximately 15 percent of our site's total purchased electricity.
  • Stewardship: Our passionate team at Mt. Vernon is dedicated to achieving excellence in sustainability, contributing to over 15 percent savings in absolute energy consumption while increasing production volumes fourfold in the last decade. This dedication has been recognized with the State of Indiana's Governor's Award for Environmental Stewardship.

In line with AstraZeneca's Ambition Zero Carbon strategy, the Company is innovating to optimize the efficiency of its manufacturing processes and develop new sources of renewable energy. AstraZeneca's commitment to sustainable operations recognizes the interconnection between business growth and the needs of people, society and our planet.
