Today the Eurogroup reappointed Tuomas Saarenheimo as President of the Eurogroup Working Group (EWG). The EWG prepares the meetings of the finance ministers of the euro area.

Tuomas Saarenheimo has held this position since 2020. The new two-year term will run from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2028.

Today's appointment follows Mr Saarenheimo's election by EWG members on 5 February 2026.

Mr Saarenheimo has also been re-elected as the President of the Economic and Financial Committee (EFC), which, among other tasks, contributes to preparaing the work of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council.

Background

The EWG prepares the meetings of the Eurogroup and promotes policy coordination on euro-area specific matters. It is composed of representatives of the euro area member states of the Economic and Financial Committee, the European Commission and the European Central Bank. The office of the President of the EWG is located in the General Secretariat of the Council of the EU, in Brussels.

Mr Saarenheimo is a Finnish national who, until 2020, has served as Permanent Under-Secretary for International and Financial Market Affairs at the Finnish Ministry of Finance. In this capacity he has been representing Finland at the EWG and EFC since 2013.
