Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea (ATLAS) Launched

28 August 2026

The IAEA has launched ATLAS (Atomic Technologies Licensed for Applications at Sea), a new initiative focused on nuclear technologies at sea.

Over two days in Washington, D.C., international leaders and experts discussed emerging applications, from small modular reactors for shipping to floating nuclear power plants, and the frameworks needed to ensure their safe, secure and responsible deployment.

Heads of delegations also visited the Port of Baltimore and toured the NS Savannah, which was the world's first nuclear-powered merchant ship.
