Don't be overdue for this party! The community is invited to help us celebrate the Library's 125th birthday 3-5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at City Hall, 100 Fort Worth Trail.

See a presentation by Library Director Midori Clark at 3 p.m. in the City Council Chamber, followed immediately by a reception in the lobby. Visitors can enjoy a special exhibit highlighting the Library's history, enjoy a performance by Fort Worth musician Ginny Mac, take yourself back in time with a special photo booth, pick up a limited-edition 125 library card, enjoy refreshments and prize drawings.

"I feel privileged to be leading Fort Worth Public Library in its 125th year," Clark said. "The Library is deeply rooted in Fort Worth, having been an integral part of its history. I'm equally excited that the Library continues to grow to meet the ever-changing needs of this thriving city."

Humble beginnings

Fort Worth's first free public library, the Carnegie Public Library of Fort Worth, opened its doors on Thursday, Oct. 17, 1901, to an eager community. It offered almost 7,000 books to a city of about 27,000 residents. Learn more about the Library's first 125 years.

Through the years, the Library has worked to keep pace with Fort Worth's tremendous growth. The system now supports 20 locations across the city to accommodate a city of more than 1 million people.

A bright future

The new Sendera Springs Branch Library in northwest Fort Worth is expected to open in early 2027. Plans are in the works for a new downtown flagship library in the 900 block of Summit Avenue. A new strategic plan will launch soon to help guide the Library into the immediate future.

Besides books and buildings, the Fort Worth Public Library offers a host of other items for checkout and a full slate of programs to suit a variety of interests for all ages.
