ATLANTA - State Representative Katie Dempsey (R-Rome), chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Human Resources, recently served as a speaker during "Childcare at a Crossroads: A State Legislative Framework," a virtual panel discussion held as part of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Base Camp 2026. NCSL Base Camp is an annual virtual training and policy conference designed for state legislators and legislative staff, covering emerging state and federal policy trends.
"As a longtime advocate for Georgia's children and families, I am grateful to NCSL for the opportunity to participate in this important discussion and represent Georgia in conversations about the future of childcare," said Rep. Dempsey. "During the panel, I emphasized that meaningful progress begins at the local level, where communities can identify their unique needs and develop solutions that best serve their children and families. I also appreciated the chance to share Georgia's approach and learn from other states. I am proud of the work of NCSL's bipartisan Childcare Policy Work Group in developing recommendations to help states address these challenges and look forward to continuing these conversations and advancing solutions that reflect the needs of children and families nationwide."
During the virtual panel, Rep. Dempsey provided an overview of Georgia's childcare framework and discussed recommendations to expand access and strengthen the quality of care across the state. The virtual panel discussion also centered on the findings of a report developed by NCSL's bipartisan Childcare Policy Work Group, of which Rep. Dempsey is a member. The work group consists of 13 state legislators from across the nation who share an expertise in childcare policy and represent a range of professional backgrounds and perspectives.
