The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is alerting the public that the replacement of the railroad crossingson Route 7(Railroad Street) in North Canaan is scheduled to begin at approximately 5 a.m. on Monday,October 27, and extending through Friday,October 31.
The existingrailroad crossings, locatedon Route 7near the intersection of KillaweeStreet, arebeing completely replaced with all-new materials to enhancesafety, provide a smooth passagefor motorists, as well asensuringthe long-term viability of freightrail service inthe region.
The work to replace the railroad crossing will require a detour utilizingNorth Elm Street due to full closure of Route 7at the railroad crossing during construction. All businessesand residencesonRoute 7will remain accessible throughout the short-term construction project. Detour routes will be clearly postedto bypass the construction site. Motorists are asked to use caution while navigating the detour route.
"This project ensures the freight line remainsin a state of good repair. To ensure the safety of everyone, vehicles cannot travel through the work zone. We ask motorists to follow the posted detour routes during this short-term construction project," said Connecticut Department of Transportation Rail AdministratorRich Jankovich. "We appreciate the support and collaboration with the Town of North Canaan, local businesses, residents, and the Housatonic Railroadwhile this important safety improvement project takes place."
Thisprojectis being performed by the Housatonic Railroad, with assistancefrom aConnecticut Department of Transportation's Rail Freight Infrastructure Program grant. Work is being carriedoutin full coordination between the CTDOT, Town of North Canaan, first responders, bus and transit providers, and the HousatonicRailroad.
