Klobuchar Statement as Canadian Retaliatory Tariffs Take Effect

MINNESOTA - U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), co-chair of the Canada-U.S. Inter-Parliamentary Group, released the following statement as Canada's retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods take effect today.

Klobuchar is a lead sponsor on legislation to revoke the newest global tariffs and 50 percent tariffs on Canada.

"The Administration's 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods, along with Canada's retaliatory tariffs that took effect today, will only make it harder for Minnesota businesses and farmers to compete and will further drive up prices for families.

I've opposed these tariffs from the beginning and I was a lead sponsor of bipartisan legislation to overturn the tariffs on Canada that passed the Senate.

Canada is Minnesota's top trading partner. The Administration must end its trade war with one of our closest allies. I'll continue to stand up for the U.S.-Canada relationship and Minnesota's economy."

Klobuchar, along with Senators Maria Cantwell (D-WA) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA), introduced the Trade Review Act, legislation to require that any new tariffs receive congressional review and approval within 60 days.

In October 2025, bipartisan legislation led by Senators Klobuchar, Tim Kaine (D-VA), Rand Paul (R-KY), and Mark Warner (D-VA) passed the Senate 50-46 to repeal President Trump's International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) tariffs on Canada. Earlier this year, similar legislation was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives.

Klobuchar serves as co-chair of the Canada-U.S. Inter-Parliamentary Group together with Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND). The group was established in 1959 as a forum for U.S. members of Congress and Canadian parliamentarians to have an ongoing dialogue on major issues of mutual concern.
