LOS ANGELES - Mayor Bass today issued the following statement:

"I am saddened by the passing of Ms. Shirley Raines, a vocal advocate for homeless Angelenos who used her media platform to bring awareness to the crisis on our streets and bring voice to some of our most vulnerable populations.

"Through her non-profit Beauty 2 the Streetz, Ms. Raines showed all of us that even those who didn't have much, deserved to be well-fed and well-taken care of, underscoring our shared and collective humanity - regardless of our housing status.

"Whether it was a hot meal from her van, a mobile shower, haircuts or face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic, Shirley Raines became a recognized and warm face on Skid Row, selflessly leading with the compassion and dignity every person deserves.

"While I did not know her personally, I deeply admired her work and remain profoundly grateful for the impact she had on those living on Skid Row. Today I want to honor her contributions to the city she loved, and the people she dedicated herself to. My heart is with Shirley, her family and all those who were touched by her work."
