OHR March Newsletter - Director's Message
Dear Residents, Neighbors, and Friends:
Each March, we recognize Women's History Month and honor the generations of women whose courage, creativity, and perseverance have shaped our communities. Their leadership has strengthened our institutions and expanded our understanding of what is possible. Across public service, advocacy, education, caregiving, the arts, and countless other fields, women have driven progress in ways both visible and unseen. This month invites us to celebrate the trailblazers whose names we know well and to remember the many women whose contributions have made our society more just and inclusive.
This year, the Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (ONSE) is commemorating Women's History Month by highlighting women leaders across the Public Safety and Justice Cluster. I was honored to participate on behalf of the Office of Human Rights. This recognition reflects the collective work our team is doing every day to advance justice, dignity, and human rights for all District residents. You can view the feature here.
Reflecting on what first drew me to this work, I was reminded that our sense of fairness often begins long before we have the words to describe it. As a young child, I wrote a letter to a television network after noticing how few female characters were represented on a children's show. I did not know yet know the word "equity," but the instinct to notice who is included-and who is not -and to speak up has stayed with me throughout my life and career. That same instinct is at the heart of OHR's work to ensure that our neighbors, colleagues, and communities are heard, protected, and valued.
As we observe Women's History Month, let us recommit ourselves not only to honoring the women who shaped our history, but also to carrying their legacies forward through our actions, our leadership, and our shared commitment to opportunity and inclusion. OHR will continue this spirit of engagement in April as we recognize Language Access Month, Fair Housing Month, and Second Chance Month. Additional details on these upcoming events are included below, and we encourage you to join us as we continue these vital conversations across the District.
Together, we can help build a District that is more just, more inclusive, and reflective of the values we share.
