Bowie State University's Symphony of Soul Marching Band , under the direction of Billy Bennett, director of university bands, participated in the second annual Capitol Battle of the Bands on Sept. 28 at SECU Stadium at the University of Maryland, College Park. Hosted by Jabari Banks, star of Bel Airon Peacock, the event showcased the talents of nine HBCU marching bands from prestigious institutions, highlighting artistic excellence, musical precision and vibrant energy before an enthusiastic crowd of alumni and supporters.
The Symphony of Soul electrified the audience with a set featuring songs by Tyler, the Creator, Britney Spears, Summer Walker and Doechii. They closed their "50,000 watts of soul" field performance with high energy and a nod to DMV natives in attendance. The show included a surprise appearance by Goldie, Bowie State's beloved mascot, who joined the band during their closing song. Chants of "Go Goldie!" filled the stadium as she showed off her dance moves to roaring approval from the stands.
Beyond the music, the performance carried a deeper meaning. Bennett shared that the band's visibility is inspiring future Bulldogs.
"Several high school students told me after the show that Bowie State is now their top choice," said Bennett, assistant professor of instrumental music. "That's what makes these performances so meaningful, we're showing what's possible here."
The Symphony of Soul continues to raise the bar in performance and academic excellence, serving as ambassadors to the local community. Their participation in the Capitol Battle of the Bands not only entertained but also strengthened Bowie State's reputation as a university where talent, culture and opportunity thrive.
