PULSE MEMORIAL TAKES NEXT STEP TOWARD A LASTING PLACE OF REMEMBRANCE

Community partners reaffirm their commitment to honoring the 49, survivors and families

ORLANDO, Fla. - On Monday, October 12, the Orlando City Council will vote to approve the Pulse Memorial construction contract with Gomez Construction Company, marking a significant milestone in the community's effort to create a lasting place of remembrance and reflection for the 49 people whose lives were taken on June 12, 2016. This action marks the transition from the design phase of the project into construction.

The Memorial's design is rooted in the conceptual design developed by the Pulse Memorial Advisory Committee (PMAC), an 18-member committee which was comprised of Pulse families and survivors, members of the LGBTQ+ and the broader Orlando community and other stakeholders. Over the course of seven months in late 2024 and early 2025, PMAC worked together to establish the conceptual vision that became the foundation for the Pulse Memorial.

As the design is finalized and the project is moving into the construction phase led by Gomez Construction Company, with a Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) of $ $12,624,837, the city also announced $1.75 million in financial support from community partners who have continued to support Pulse families, survivors and the Orlando community in the decade since the tragedy. This philanthropic support builds on contributions from Orange County and the State of Florida.

The philanthropic partners include: DeVos Family Foundation, Dr. Phillips Charities, Orlando Health, Universal Destinations & Experiences, Wilf Family Foundations and Walt Disney World Resort.

"These commitments represent more than financial support for the Pulse Memorial. They reflect the extraordinary spirit of collaboration that emerged in Orlando following June 12, 2016, and the continued commitment of community partners to honoring the 49 angels, supporting survivors and families, and carrying forward the spirit of #OrlandoUnited," said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.

As the project progresses, the city is also sharing one meaningful element of the Memorial that has not previously been made public:

A passage of "Sonnet to Orlando," Lin-Manuel Miranda's emotional poem delivered at the 2016 Tony Awards, just hours after the Pulse tragedy, will be incorporated into the Survivor Wall in the Memorial's Survivor Common Area. In his sonnet, which became a symbol of strength, solace and unity worldwide, Miranda reflected on the tragedy and the enduring power of love, including the iconic words, "love is love is love is love … cannot be killed or swept aside."

The 2016 Tony Awards were dedicated to those affected by the tragedy, with host James Corden telling the audience at the beginning of the ceremony, "Your tragedy is our tragedy." Lin-Manuel read his sonnet while accepting the award for Best Original Score for the musical Hamilton.

The memorial will transform the Pulse site into a place that honors the lives and legacies of the 49 angels while recognizing the survivors, families and the countless people whose lives were forever changed by the tragedy. The Memorial will serve as a place to remember the 49 and reflect on the love, resilience and unity that emerged from one of the darkest days in Orlando's history.

Construction is expected to begin this fall with completion of the Pulse Memorial expected by the end of 2027.
