State Police investigate tragic accident in Chemung County

On October 19, 2024, at approximately 10:02 p.m., the New York State Police in Horseheads responded to a reported burglary at 235 Prospect Hill Road in the town of Horseheads, NY.

Upon arrival, troopers observed an open garage with several damaged items inside and a vehicle in the driveway that had been sideswiped.

During the investigation, troopers discovered tire tracks leading across the lawn toward a pond. Upon further inspection, a white Subaru was located submerged in the water with the driver deceased. The driver has been identified as 84-year-old William Olin of Beaver Dams, NY.

The Chemung County Medical Examiner responded to the scene and ordered the deceased to be transported to St. Joseph's Hospital for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

The New York State Police were assisted by the Big Flats Fire Department and the Wellsburg Fire Department.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the circumstances that led to the incident. No further details are available at this time.
