Biology Graduate Earns Historic Fulbright Award to Conduct Research in Indonesia

Southeast Missouri State University graduate Emily Hudgins has become the University's first student to receive a Fulbright U.S. Student Program award, earning a highly competitive opportunity to conduct research in Indonesia.

The Fulbright Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, is the nation's flagship international academic exchange program with programs available to both students and scholars. Recipients are selected through a rigorous national competition based on academic achievement, leadership potential and the ability to serve as cultural ambassadors abroad.

For Hudgins, who recently graduated with a degree in biology, the award represents the culmination of months of preparation and anticipation.

"I submitted the application in October, so I had been waiting to hear back for a long time," Hudgins said. "Having to wait that long made it very suspenseful. In April, I received the email telling me to check my application status, so I went down to the grad student office and logged in. My hands were shaking the whole time, and I couldn't really process the letter as I was reading it. I had to read it several times to make sure it said what I thought it said. I was really surprised and also really proud of myself."

Hudgins will travel to Indonesia to study marine macroinvertebrates, a field that combines her passion for biology, research and community engagement.

"I have always loved traveling," she said. "As a biologist, I think it is great to see and experience other ecosystems outside of the one you grew up in. It allows you to see and apply concepts you have learned in classes better because you aren't clouded by familiarity, and it exposes you to other cultures and perspectives that help you grow both as a person and as a professional."

I'M INTERESTED IN RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

Throughout the application process, Hudgins worked to develop a proposal that would not only advance her research interests but also create meaningful connections with local communities.

Dr. Kevin Timlin, executive director of International Education and Services and the University's Fulbright Program Advisor (FPA), said Hudgins' achievement reflects both her dedication and the growing strength of SEMO's support for nationally competitive scholarships.

"Emily's selection as a Fulbright grantee is an extraordinary accomplishment and a historic milestone for SEMO," Timlin said. "Fulbright recipients are chosen from among the nation's most talented students, and Emily's curiosity, research experience and commitment to cross-cultural engagement made her a strong candidate. We are excited to see her represent SEMO and the United States while contributing meaningful research in Indonesia."

Timlin was recently selected to participate in Fulbright's prestigious FPA Development Initiative, which helps institutions strengthen their support of students pursuing Fulbright opportunities.

"Through participation in the initiative, I'll be working to ensure Emily is the first of many SEMO student grantees," Timlin said.

Hudgins hopes her experience will encourage other students to pursue ambitious opportunities, even when the application process feels daunting.

"I've been incredibly fortunate to have mentors who have supported me every step of the way," Hudgins said. "Dr. Fritz and Dr. Taylor helped deepen my interest in ecology and macroinvertebrate research, but they also always made themselves available whenever I needed guidance. Working in Dr. Kirschman's lab helped me grow as a biologist and gave me the confidence to pursue opportunities like the Fulbright. Even mentors from my undergraduate years continue to influence my career. Looking back, this achievement is really a reflection of all the people who invested their time, encouragement and expertise in me along the way."

Her achievement marks a new chapter for SEMO's international education efforts and demonstrates how undergraduate research, faculty mentorship and global experiences can prepare students to compete nationally.
