Public Works' Week in Review for January 23, 2025

The Public Works Department is made up of various sub-departments including Fleet, Line Repair, Streets/Stormwater and Traffic, Wastewater, and Water. Each week, over 100 employees are responsible for the maintenance, monitoring, and improvement of existing and new infrastructure across League City which includes everything from roadways and traffic lights to storm drains, sewers, and water production.

Below are some tips and projects they are working on:

Corrugated Metal Pipe Repair in Meadow Bend Ditch

The Public Works Stormwater Department is currently repairing rotted or damaged corrugated metal pipe (CMP) in multiple locations. CMP is a type of pipe typically made from steel that has been corrugated (folded) to create a stronger structure. These pipes are commonly used for stormwater drainage, culverts, and other infrastructure applications.

The lifespan of CMPs is influenced by many factors, including soil composition, moisture levels, and the surrounding materials. To ensure the pipes remain in good condition, the Stormwater Department conducts routine inspections of the outfall pipes, as well as mowing and other maintenance along drainage easements. This allows them to monitor the pipes and detect potential issues before failure, scheduling replacements proactively when needed.

However, failures can sometimes occur deeper underground or further away from the visible end of the pipe. In such cases, the area is promptly fenced off, and repairs are scheduled as soon as possible to minimize disruption and prevent further damage. When repairs are made crews install reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) or a high-density polyethylene pipe (HDPE) to help prevent these types of failures in the future.

Clarifier Maintenance

League City Wastewater Operations recently changed scrub brushes on secondary clarifiers at the Southwest Water Reclamation Facility. Over time, scrub brushes will wear down, reducing their ability to remove accumulated debris and algae from the clarifier's surface. Regular replacement ensures that the clarifier operates smoothly, preventing costly downtime or damage to equipment.

Female and Male Pine Cones:

Did you know that Pine trees (and other conifers) have two different types of cones on the same tree-female cones and male cones? Female cones (which are what most people think of as the typical pine cone) contain the seeds, and male cones (which appear in small clusters) contain the pollen. This time of year, is the perfect time to observe both types of cones on your trees.
