October 2025 Member Spotlight: Danny Schust, MD
Danny Schust, MD
For more than three decades, Dr. Danny Schust has been an active, engaged, and deeply influential member of ASRM.
Dr. Schust began his medical journey at the University of Wisconsin, where he earned both his BS and medical degrees. He continued his training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for his Ob/Gyn residency before completing his fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) at Brigham and Women's Hospital. His passion for discovery led him into a six-year postdoctoral program in immunopathology at MIT and Harvard Medical School. His time there ignited his lifelong commitment to research.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Schust has held numerous leadership roles. At the University of Missouri, he served as the REI Division Head and Director of the MD/PhD training program for 16 years. Today, he is a Distinguished Professor, Vice Chair for Research in Ob/Gyn, and Director of the REI Fellowship Program at Duke University. He also leads the NIH's prestigious Reproductive Scientist Development Program, which cultivates the next generation of physician-scientists.
His clinical work focuses on isolated and recurrent pregnancy loss and reproductive imaging, while his laboratory investigates the earliest stages of human placental development, including placental immunology, infection, and stem cell biology. He has authored more than 200 manuscripts and book chapters, contributing significantly to both clinical practice and scientific knowledge in reproductive medicine.
Dr. Schust says that his 30-year ASRM membership has given him a platform and a community.
"ASRM has been my home for scientific learning and presentation. It has given me access to funding opportunities and national leadership roles that have helped me grow as both a clinician and a scientist."
Dr. Schust has held several leadership positions within ASRM groups, including the Early Pregnancy, Reproductive Immunology, and Imaging Special Interest Groups, and he served as chair of the Program Planning Committee.
Asked about the most valuable skills he's developed, Dr. Schust points to three areas: his capacity for basic and translational science, nurtured through NIH-sponsored K12 training grants; his clinical acumen, built during fellowship and refined through years of practice; and his leadership, shaped by institutional roles and opportunities within ASRM.
Looking ahead, his goals remain firmly rooted in education and mentorship. "I want to continue to advance clinical and research training for future generations."
His advice to new members is simple but powerful. "Get involved in any way you can-start small and continue to be active."
With his enduring contributions to clinical practice, research, and education, Dr. Danny Schust exemplifies the spirit of ASRM. His 30 years of membership tell the story of a physician-scientist committed not only to advancing the field but also to building the future of reproductive medicine.
