Announcement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the Greek Delegation to the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai (06.09.2025)

A Greek Delegation headed by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alexandra Papadopoulou and Secretary General of the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, Giorgos Kalantzis, landed at 7:15 a.m. at Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos", on a special Aegean flight from Sharm El Sheikh Airport.
Yesterday afternoon, the delegation visited the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai to ensure the safe transfer of Archbishop Damianos and Greek citizens in the Monastery, including nine monks who wished to return to Athens.
Under the responsibility of the Holy Sinai Brotherhood, the Holy Monastery continues to operate normally and is open to visitors. The procedures for the succession of the Archbishop of Sinai, Mr. Damianos, will commence in the coming days following his publicly expressed intention and the Fundamental Charter of the Holy Monastery.
