PEOPLE-CENTERED DEVELOPMENT AT THE HEART OF...

"Our people will be at the centre of development and the National Development Plan therefore is shaped as a Plan for the people."

These were the sentiments shared by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Hon. Professor Biman Prasad as Guest Speaker on the panal discussion of the 2025-2029 and Vision 2050: NDP organised by Dialogue Fiji at the University of the South Pacific yesterday evening. (25.09.24)

"The NDP is the result of extensive engagements and consultations undertaken to understand the concerns and issues confronting the people across the country. This began with the National Economic Summit in April 2023. It was followed by Technical Working Group (based on 11 thematic areas) meetings which consisted of key stakeholders from the private sector, civil society, academia, and multilateral and bilateral development partners to gather input and feedback on various aspects of development needs and challenges."

DPM Prasad said this culminated in the face-to-face public consultations with over 21,000 people across the 4 divisions of Fiji.

He added public consultations were well represented by women and youth with the NDP taking into account Fiji's international obligations under the United Nations and other international and regional organisations.

"There will be a particular focus on impactful enablers to catalyse human development, increase economic activity and propel economic growth, while mitigating against shocks such as the impact of natural disasters"

He said the NDP tells the story of where Fiji is going over the next 3 and 5 years, how it intends to get there, and importantly why with policies and strategies contained in the NDP that are crucial towards attracting investment and raising productivity in key growth sectors in order to sustain higher economic growth rates.
