The 349th Air Mobility Wing, 446th Airlift Wing, 514th Airlift Wing, and 927th Air Refueling Wing conducted a Strategic Combat Agile Readiness (SCAR) exercise from August 2-14 to demonstrate rapid response, deployment capabilities, and base sustainment operations in high-threat environments while integrating each Airman under the Multi-capable Airmen (MCA) concept. The exercise took place at three geographically separated locations: Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Georgia; Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California; and March ARB, California.
"The main purpose of this exercise is to test and ensure that our members going downrange are ready for the fight," said Senior Master Sgt. Stephanie Greer, SCAR exercise control group director. "We like to say 'we sweat in training so we don't bleed in war,' and that's exactly what we're doing here."
This exercise aimed to assess the readiness of Reserve Airmen from four different Wings to swiftly deploy combat-ready personnel and mobility assets to counter emerging high-end threats at a moment's notice. Some of the capabilities tested included AFSC specific tasks associated with airfield damage recovery, integrated base defense, cargo/passenger terminal processing, personnel accountability, and field sustainment services under stress in a contingency environment.
"This exercise is meant to conduct training amongst several AFSC's to determine our capabilities of establishing a forward operating base," said Tech. Sgt. Ivan Ramirez, SCAR exercise Security Forces Instructor and Wing Inspector Team (WIT). "One of the things I didn't expect is how receptive other AFSC's are to [the Security Forces] career field and their willingness to learn…that's all you can ask for as a cadre."
The inspection was evaluated by the 4th Air Force Inspector General office with the help of WIT members across the Reserve enterprise, assessing each units' ability to integrate with one another and fulfill their missions in a simulated, high-stress environment.
"I hope that Air Force Reserve Command continues exercises like this." said Ramirez. "I think it's great exposure that gets us out of our comfort zone not only for me, as a cadre, but also participating as a student."
