Illinois House Minority Leader Gives Galena High School Trapshooting Team a Scholarship

October 8, 2025

Illinois House Minority Leader Tony McCombie recently visited the Galena High School Trapshooting Team to present a scholarship on behalf of the Illinois Legislative Sportsmen's Caucus, a bipartisan, bicameral group of lawmakers dedicated to promoting hunting, fishing, conservation, and outdoor recreation across the state.

Leader McCombie met with the team during their practice at the Scales Mound Gun Club in Schapville, where she commended the students for their commitment to teamwork, safety, and skill development.

"Participation in extracurricular activities is vital to student growth, and trapshooting is an impressive sport that teaches responsibility, precision, and respect for firearms," said McCombie. "I'm proud to support these students and the lessons they are learning both on and off the range."

The Galena High School Trapshooting Team was established in the fall of 2020 and has quickly grown in popularity among students. Since its start, the team has benefited from other scholarships and contributions from organizations, which help reduce the cost of participation for students and their families during both the spring and fall trap seasons.

Firearm sports like trapshooting play a vital role in preserving Illinois' outdoor traditions and in promoting firearm safety education. Through structured programs like this, young athletes gain hands-on experience that encourages discipline, sportsmanship, and a lifelong respect for safe and responsible gun ownership.

The Illinois Legislative Sportsmen's Caucus brings together members of both political parties and both chambers of the General Assembly. The group works to safeguard the rights of hunters and anglers while supporting conservation efforts and expanding youth engagement in outdoor activities.

One of the most impactful ways the Caucus supports local communities is through its scholarship program. Each year, proceeds from events are reinvested into schools and youth initiatives. These scholarships help high school fishing, trapshooting and other teams across Illinois by helping with the overall costs.

Leader McCombie congratulates the Galena High School Trapshooting Team on their achievements and is proud to support their continued success through the Illinois Legislative Sportsmen's Caucus.
