Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia Announces Over $937 Million in Disaster Recovery Funding for Texas, Harris County, and Houston

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia announced that Texas will receive more than $937 million in Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). This funding, aimed at bolstering recovery efforts from Hurricane Beryl and the May derecho storm, includes $67,326,000 to Harris County, $314,645,000 to the City of Houston, and $555,687,000 to the state.

This funding is part of the Biden-Harris Administration's broader announcement of nearly $12 billion in funds to assist communities across the nation impacted by recent disasters. These federal dollars were made available thanks to the Disaster Supplemental funding package that passed out of Congress late last year. Congresswoman Garcia worked closely with the greater Houston Congressional delegation to advocate and help secure these dollars that will make a huge difference for families, small businesses, and seniors across the region.

"After everything Houston and Harris County have endured this last year, from the derecho to Beryl, recovery was never going to be enough. We need to rebuild with resilience and mitigation at the forefront-and today, the Biden-Harris Administration is making that a reality," said Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia. "With these funds, $67,326,000 for Harris County and $314,645,000 for Houston, I fought to secure alongside many of my colleagues in Congress, we're not just rebuilding, we're reshaping our future in the face of extreme weather. We're building homes that will stand strong for generations, supporting small businesses that are the lifeblood of our communities, and putting the greater Houston region on the map as the Resilience Capital of the country. Every dollar invested here won't just help us recover-it will save lives and set a new standard for the nation."

The funding will support critical activities such as:

  • Rebuilding affordable housing with enhanced resilience to future disasters.
  • Strengthening infrastructure, including roads, utilities, and water systems.
  • Supporting economic revitalization by assisting small businesses and creating job.
  • Implement disaster mitigation measures to reduce risk of damage from future extreme weather and disaster events.

Congresswoman Garcia remains committed to advocating for disaster relief and policies that prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable communities in her district and across the state of Texas.
