Addie Borah named 2026 Outstanding Mentor for apprenticeships

May 4, 2026

Dakota State University academic advisor Addie Borah was recognized as the 2026 StartTodaySD Apprenticeship Program Outstanding Mentor at last week's Apprenticeship Summit.

The event, hosted by the South Dakota Department of Labor and Regulation, celebrated the achievements and impact that the Registered Apprenticeship Program has had in South Dakota. Governor Larry Rhoden was in attendance, and as part of the summit, announced an expansion of youth apprenticeships for high school students.

Borah has worked with DSU's Teacher Apprenticeship Pathway (TAP) participants since the program's inception in 2023. Her work is focused on guiding students through the program, providing a support system as participants navigate balancing coursework with their full-time paraprofessional duties and life outside of the classroom.

"It's been a very meaningful experience to mentor these individuals through the program," said Borah. "These are people who are passionate about education but have had barriers keeping them from obtaining their certification. The TAP program offers a way.

"It can be a daunting journey for them on top of work, family, and life. Being able to see the potential in these individuals, and more important helping them see it in themselves - as well as a clear path to their goal - has been a real honor," she said.

In addition to Borah's honors, DSU had several stakeholders as part of the summit's program. Dr. David DeJong, dean of the College of Education & Human Performance, spoke on SD TAP and its importance to the state. Three graduates of that program, Jaimie Bartmann, Riley Morrison, and Courtney VanBatavia, were included in a graduation ceremony during the program.

"Our teacher apprentices love Addie," said DeJong. "Addie is such a genuine and authentic person. Her mentorship is a big reason why the South Dakota Teacher Apprenticeship Pathway continues to help so many people."
