Gilbert, Ariz. - Drivers heading to SanTan Village should plan for delays over the next several weeks as three separate road projects overlap in the same area.
Williams Field Road and Market Street
Starting July 30 and continuing for about four weeks, intersection restrictions will be in effect 24/7 at Williams Field Road and Market Street. This will affect access into the SanTan Village shopping areas. Digital message boards will be posted nearby with suggested detour routes. Motorists are encouraged to use SanTan Village Parkway to reach the mall and avoid this intersection when possible.
SanTan Village Parkway at Loop 202
Starting July 31 and continuing for about four weeks, SanTan Village Parkway will see nighttime lane restrictions closer to the freeway. Both northbound and southbound lanes will be reduced to two lanes between 9 PM and 5 AM, and the Loop 202 exit ramp will be restricted during those overnight hours. This work is separate from the Williams Field/Market Street project above and does not affect SanTan Village Parkway as a detour route into the mall during normal hours.
Loop 202 Full Weekend Closure
The Arizona Department of Transportation will fully close westbound Loop 202 between Williams Field and Gilbert roads from 10 PM Friday, July 31, to 5 AM Monday, Aug. 3. The westbound Loop 202 on-ramp at Higley Road will also be closed during this time. Drivers may consider using westbound Williams Field or Higley roads to Germann Road to reconnect with westbound Loop 202 at Gilbert or Cooper roads.
Why the work is happening
The Williams Field/Market Street and SanTan Village Parkway/Loop 202 projects are part of the Town of Gilbert's active capital improvement program, designed to ease congestion and improve safety at these intersections. The SanTan Village Parkway work will add a left-turn lane for northbound traffic at the freeway interchange, an intersection that already sees backups due to a nearby school and a single-lane freeway entrance ramp.
The Loop 202 weekend closure is part of a larger, separate ADOT and Maricopa Association of Governments project widening Loop 202 between Loop 101 and Val Vista Drive. That project is meant to keep up with growing traffic demand in the southeast Valley, where the population is expected to grow nearly 30 percent between 2020 and 2040.
What drivers should do
Motorists heading to SanTan Village are encouraged to use SanTan Village Parkway to enter the mall area and avoid the Williams Field/Market Street intersection when possible. Anyone traveling through the area, especially at night or over the July 31 weekend, should allow extra time, follow posted detour signage, and expect delays through late August.
The Williams Field/Market Street work is expected to wrap up by the end of August, when turn lane access will be restored.
