The American Bankers Association today announced the 2025 relaunch of its award-winning consumer protection campaigns, #BanksNeverAskThat and #PracticeSafeChecks, aimed at helping consumers and small businesses recognize and avoid fraud and scams.
Banks of all sizes across the nation will join ABA in promoting and amplifying the consumer protection tips included in the two campaigns. To date, more than 2500 banks have participated in one or both of the campaigns.
This year's updated #BanksNeverAskThat campaign introduces a new theme - "Snap Out of It!" - designed to help consumers identify scam red flags and break free from the common psychological tactics that scammers use to earn trust and manipulate their victims.
"Banks remain committed to winning the fight against fraud and the best way to do that is to help bank customers spot scams before they can do any damage," said Rob Nichols, ABA president and CEO. "The #BanksNeverAskThat and #PracticeSafeChecks campaigns have helped millions of consumers protect themselves from bad actors, and with the help of banks across the country, we're confident this year's campaigns will be even more successful."
The need for consumer education has never been greater. According to the Federal Trade Commission, consumers reported losing $12.5 billion to fraud in 2024, a 25% increase over the previous year.
The #BanksNeverAskThat campaign, now in its sixth year, uses engaging videos, quizzes and social media content to highlight common ways scammers try to impersonate your bank. The new theme encourages people to trust their instincts and recognize when something feels off - whether it's a suspicious message, an urgent request or an offer that seems too good to be true.
The #PracticeSafeChecks campaign, now in its second year, also returns with a new focus on small businesses, which are often targeted due to the larger dollar amounts on business checks. The campaign encourages small businesses to adopt digital payment options whenever possible and offers practical tips for safer check usage, including enrolling in Positive Pay and other fraud prevention strategies.
In recognition of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, ABA and registered banks will kick off the yearlong campaigns on Oct. 1, with coordinated outreach efforts including educational events, social media engagement and community partnerships.
Banks registered for this year's free campaigns have access to a comprehensive toolkit of resources to help share the consumer protection tips with their customers including sample social media posts, branch and ATM signage as well as new videos. Both campaigns have updated websites in both English and Spanish.
