UK Music has welcomed a new report from CIISA (Creative Industries Independent Standards Authority) that exposes the hidden £1.8 billion economic toll of workplace conflict in the UK's creative industries.
The report, entitled Growth Through Accountability, sets out new economic analysis on the cost of workplace conflict. Drawing on insights from former UK Government specialists as well as expertise from across the UK's cultural and creative industries, it reveals the damaging consequences of workplace bullying, harassment and discriminatory behaviour.
The report's concerning findings clearly highlight the significant negative economic impact of unsafe working environments across the UK's creative sector on the British economy. Despite being one of the UK's strongest economic sectors and a priority for the Government's economic growth strategy, this research estimates that nearly a third of the UK's creative industries' 2.4 million workers experience workplace conflict.
As an independent Standards body for the creative industries to tackle harmful behaviour, CIISA will focus on supporting organisations to embed Standards, while offering an independent, confidential reporting service for people working in the creative industries to report concerns.
CIISA CEO Jen Smith said: "This report illustrates that bullying and harassment, including behaviour of a discriminatory nature, are current and persistent problems within the creative industries, not only harming our talented workforce but creating a large economic burden for the sector, which could be significantly reduced through prevention and proactive measures, like the very practical support CIISA will offer to both employers and individuals."
UK Music Chief Executive Tom Kiehl said: "UK Music and our members support CIISA and we welcome this important report on how we can make the music industry a safe and welcoming environment for everyone. These concerning findings are a stark reminder that there is no place for bullying, harassment, or discrimination in the workplace, and we welcome CIISA's efforts to help identify and root out such behaviour from our industry."
