City of Montgomery Launches 'Montgomery Cares: Hope & Healing Drive' to Support Survivors of Domestic Violence

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the City of Montgomery Mayor's Office, in partnership with the Office of Violence Prevention (OVP), is launching the Montgomery Cares: Hope & Healing Drive, a citywide donation campaign benefiting survivors of domestic violence and families seeking support services in Montgomery.

The campaign, which runs October 20 through November 11, encourages City employees, residents, businesses, faith-based organizations, and community partners to donate essential personal care and hygiene products that will be used to assemble 200 care bags for two local organizations serving individuals and families impacted by domestic violence.

The City aims to provide:

  • 100 care bags for Family Sunshine Center
  • 100 care bags for One Place Family Justice Center

"Montgomery Cares reflects the compassion and generosity of our community," said Mayor Steven L. Reed. "By coming together to donate everyday essentials, we can help provide comfort, dignity, and hope to individuals and families on their journey toward safety, healing, and stability."

The campaign's theme, 'Small Items. Big Impact,' highlights how basic necessities can make a meaningful difference for individuals facing crisis situations. Donations collected through the drive will support local organizations that provide shelter, advocacy, counseling, legal assistance, and other critical services for survivors of domestic violence.

Requested Donation Items
Community members are encouraged to donate new, unopened items, including:

  • Feminine hygiene products (pads, tampons, liners)
  • Oral hygiene products (toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, floss)
  • First aid kits and supplies (bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers)
  • Soap and body wash
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Deodorant
  • Lotion and skin care products
  • Tissues and wipes
  • Hair care items (combs, brushes, hair ties)
  • Resource pamphlets and informational materials
  • Other essential personal care items

Donation boxes will be located throughout City of Montgomery departments to make participation convenient for employees and visitors.

"Our goal is not only to collect items, but to demonstrate to survivors that their community cares about their well-being," Reed said. "Every donation helps provide practical support while sending a message of encouragement and hope."

Family Sunshine Center and One Place Family Justice Center are partnering with the City on this initiative and will receive the assembled care bags to support clients accessing services throughout the year.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month serves as a reminder that communities play a critical role in supporting survivors, raising awareness, and promoting access to resources.

Through Montgomery Cares, the City hopes to inspire residents to take meaningful action that strengthens families and supports healing.
