WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai'i) today announced that the Department of Defense has awarded $14 million to repair a fire station at Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) on Hawai'i Island. While the station primarily serves PTA, existing mutual aid agreements allow the PTA Fire Department to respond to fires and other emergencies within 25 miles of its base and island-wide when requested.
"This new funding will help upgrade fire station facilities at PTA so that firefighters can better respond to emergencies in the area, fight fires more effectively, and help save lives and protect communities across Hawai'i Island," said Senator Schatz.
The funding will be used to make repairs to architectural and structural elements at PTA Fire Station Building 390, restoring the fire station to full operational capacity.
