On Tuesday, December 9th, State Secretary for Defence Policy, Planning and International Relations, Sorin-Dan Moldovan, had a bilateral meeting with the Parliamentary State Secretary to the Ministry of Defence of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Nils Schmid, on the occasion of his visit to Romania, at the 57th Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base, Constanța County.
The talks emphasized the subject matters addressed during the meeting at the level of heads of state and government in July this year, in Berlin, and focused on the European and regional security situation, as well as on the prospects of the bilateral strategic defence relation between Romania and Germany, with emphasis on cooperation in the field of the defence industry.
During the meeting, the officials highlighted the celebration of 145 years of bilateral diplomatic relations between Romania and Germany, as well as the celebration of 70 years since Germany's accession to the North Atlantic Alliance.
"Germany is one of Romania's most important partners and allies, the far-reaching strategic relationship being essential for consolidating and modernizing the defence capacity and supporting the defence of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova," the Moldovan State Secretary stated.
The official thanked Germany for its contribution to the enhanced Air Policing Missions, considering it a clear proof of unity and solidarity between our countries. "The presence of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets and the German detachment's contribution to the NATO enhanced Air Policing Mission are essential, especially since we give a special priority to the protection of airspace. Thus, we participate together in securing the allied territory, and our soldiers train, exercise and further develop every day to enhance interoperability and increase the response and deterrence capacity."
In his turn, Nils Schmid stated that "Germany's participation in Air Policing Missions in Romania represents a strong signal of allied solidarity to ensure the security of the Eastern Flank against all kinds of threats."
The two delegations discussed the security challenges in the Black Sea region and the need for European cooperation in the field of defence industry and welcomed the project regarding the construction of a powder factory in Brașov County, run with the Rheinmetall Company.
With reference to the allied agenda, the officials stressed the need to increase efforts dedicated to strengthening the Eastern Flank, and addressed the importance of implementing the decisions adopted at the NATO Summit in The Hague in June this year, as well as of continuing to support Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.
Finally, the two officials reaffirmed their shared commitment to maintaining bilateral dialogue and emphasized the importance of enhancing defence cooperation, as a strategic response to current challenges and threats posed to regional and international security.
