The Medical Assistant and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) programs mark the beginning of WSC's healthcare expansion, designed to meet the growing regional demand for skilled professionals through hands-on, career-ready training right here in Williston. "These programs represent the first step in a larger healthcare education expansion that will serve Northwest North Dakota for decades to come," said Dr. Bernell Hirning, President of Williston State College. "Our new facility gives students the opportunity to learn with advanced equipment and real-world experiences, preparing them to make a difference in their communities immediately after graduation." Medical Assistant (One-Year Certificate) The Medical Assistant Program prepares students to perform both clinical and administrative duties in clinics and healthcare settings. Students complete an exam at the end of the program to become a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), with an option to add a Phlebotomy certification for additional career flexibility. "This program is designed for students who want to work directly with patients and be at the heart of a clinical team," said Tessa Van Doorne, MSN, RN, Medical Assistant Program Director. "Our goal is to build strong, confident professionals who are ready to contribute from day one-whether that's in a clinic, hospital, or specialty office." Emergency Medical Technician (One-Semester Certificate) The EMT program is designed for individuals ready to enter the fast-paced world of emergency response. Students gain foundational emergency care skills through classroom instruction, simulation, and clinical ride-alongs with local ambulance services. "EMTs are often the first point of contact in a medical emergency, and that comes with tremendous responsibility," said Matt Clark, EdD, Fire Chief and EMT Program Director. "This program gives students real-world experience, confidence under pressure, and the training needed to respond effectively when every second counts." "These programs are about impact," said Gail Raasakka, Dean of Nursing and Allied Health. "Students will gain the skills and confidence to step into critical healthcare roles that make a real difference in our communities. We're incredibly proud to launch these programs in our new facility." Enroll for Spring 2026 Enrollment is open now.
